Taragarh Fort

taragarhfort1,bundiThe noteworthy fort of Taragarh is also known as the 'Star Fort'. This massive fort was built by Ajaipal Chauhan, the founder of the city, in the 7th century. The towering fort was established on the top of the Nagpahari hill. Labeled as one of the oldest fort in the world, it is a feather in the cap of Bundi. Muster all your energy and walk the steep road which brings you face to face with the entrance gate of the fort that is flanked by two rampant (springing at one side from one level of support and resting at the other on a higher level ) elephants. They welcome you to the fort.

The fortified walls of Taragarh fort are pierced with several gates. As you walk further you will notice the remarkable Bhim Burj (massive stone tower) the largest of the battlements, on which is mounted a famous cannon named Garbha Gunjan and a huge water reservoir. This reservoir played an important role in meeting the needs of the local people during water crisis in the earlier days. The fort also houses Miran Saheb ki Dargah (tomb) which was built in the honor of a great warrior who fought until his last breath to defend Taragarh Fort when it was attacked by enemies.

Another interesting thing about Taragarh Fort are its tunnels which were once the means of escaping from enemies if needed.

Rani Mahal is another structure within the complex of Taragarh Fort which was exclusively for the Queens of the Maharajas.
