Urs Fair Ajmer

Urs Fair Ajmer, RajasthanAjmer, a famous destination of Rajasthan, is considered as a holy city. Think of Ajmer and the first thought that comes to mind is of the Dargah Sharif. The Dargah Sharif is an important pilgrimage of Muslims but people from different religious backgrounds congregate here for offering prayers at the shrine. It was built in the honor of a Sufi saint Khwaja Moin-ud-din Chishti. After his death he was buried here. He belonged to Persia. After coming to India he established the Chishtia order of fakirs and was given the title of ‘protector of the poor'. He made great efforts for upliftment of poor. The offering made at the Dargah is called 'nazrana' which consists of Chadar, Ghilaph, Neem, Rose And Jasmine Flowers, Sandalwood Paste, Perfumes And Incense.

It is the biggest and the most famous fair of Muslims which is celebrated on the first six days of Rajab (seventh month of the Islamic calendar). Devotees from across the sub continent assemble here during the fair. It is believed that once in the 16th century Mughal Emperor Akbar also came here with the desire of a heir. Later his wish got materialized.

The Dargah houses a mosque, a contribution of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan who was famous for building marvelous architectural establishments like Taj Mahal. The mosque is made of white marble and is adorned with ornate calligraphic inscriptions and fine carvings.

The festival is marked with melodious Qawwalis sung by professional qawwals in honor of the Sufi saint. Poets of all communities recite compositions dedicated to the Khwaja during the fair. Kheer is offered as prasad (blessed food) to the devotees.

It is believed that if you place your faith in this Dargah and pray earnestly, then none of your prayers go unanswered. All you need is faith.
