Hawa Mahal

Rajput rulers made a great contribution to Rajasthan when it comes to architecture. Among their most remarkable contributions was Hawa Mahal which is a landmark of Jaipur. Sawai Pratap Singh built it in pink sandstone in 1799.The idea behind the construction of this ventilated monument was to help their Queens to see and enjoy the city life without coming out in open. It is also called the Palace Of Wind.

The towering Hawa Mahal is a five-storied establishment in the form of a pyramid. The Mahal is pierced with around 953 windows, locally know as Jharokhas, with fabulous lattice work. Wind passes through these windows keeping the interiors fresh and windy. The Mahal also houses a small museum displaying royal valuables. The interior of the Mahal is quite simple in comparison to its sophisticated exterior.
