Jaisalmer Desert Festival

Desert serves as the venue for the celebration of the Desert Festival. During the festival the barrenness of the that desert takes a back seat and the cultural traditions of Rajasthan take over. It is held annually in the month of January-February with great enthusiasm.

The Jaisalmer Desert festival is sponsored by the Rajasthan State Tourism. During the festival you can see a snapshot of the vibrant culture of Rajasthan. The stalls of Rajasthani cuisine offers delicious traditional Rajasthani food to the tourists. Beautiful Rajasthani women dressed in bright costumes and adorned with classic jewelry from head to toe dance away to glory on the music played by professional Rajasthani artists.Rajasthani men are equally inclined towards jewelry and sport equally colorful dresses. Ghoomar and fire dancers(most famous dances of Rajasthan) leave the audience spellbound by their extraordinary performances.

There are stalls showcasing amazing handicrafts of the state. The handicrafts and arts of the land oozes plenty of exuberance and beauty in their style. They also play an important part in earning revenue for the state.The Rajasthani artists are undoubtedly versatile and this clearly manifests in their work.

Puppet shows make you laugh and are thoroughly enjoyed by children. The shows touch various themes like child labour, female child birth and are not only entertaining but informative too. They are one of the means of bringing about a favorable change in society. No doubt puppets look very cute with loud expressions and colorful dresses.

'Turban tying' competition is a test which judges how skilled one is in tying a turban and that too in minimum time. Rajasthani people show great eagerness in participating in this competition as they are perfect in this art. The artists use Persian design in their carpets in which the scenes from the Persian poetry have been beautifully woven.

Camel, the ship of desert, is the main highlight of the festival. The festival endorses several Camel events such as camel races, camel polo, camel parade and contest of the best decorated camel.
