Jodhpur
The Jodhpur city can be classified into four parts-Ratanada, which is dotted with old buildings and government offices; Sardarpur, which is mostly residential; Old city, housing bustling bazaars and Shastri nagar, with modern houses. All the four areas compliment each other. Mehrangarh Fort is a fine piece of architecture built by Rao Jodha, the founder of Jodhpur, in 1459. It is located on a steep hill and is 150 m high. This beautiful fort is so meticulously built that you cannot figure out where the hill ends and the fortified walls of the fort begin. It seems as if the fort has originated from the lap of the hill. The fort has several towers providing a picturesque view of the city. The fort houses palaces, galleries, temples and a museum which bring alive the glorious history of Rajasthan. Umaid Bhawan Palace is a magnificent palace which was built with the finest quality of one million square feet marble. Maharaja Umaid Singh of Jodhpur laid its foundation after his long search of a highly skilled architect. His search ended in 1925 in England where he commissioned the London firm Lanchester and Lodge. It was designed by Henry Vaughan Lanchester and its completion took almost 18 years involving around 300 artisans. It is a part of Desert triangle and is also a destination of the Palace On Wheels (among the top ten luxury trains of the world). It has been labeled as the largest royal residence in the world. Other palaces of interest in Jodhpur are the Girdikot, Sardar market, Mandore Gardens and Kailana Lake. The city is also famous for its handicrafts and miniature paintings. Its bazaars have a wide variety of embroidered shoes, carved ivory light quilts (almost 2kg). Marwar Festival is held in November and is an opportunity to get a glimpse of the art and culture of the Jodhpur region. Music and Dance is the highlight of the event. Jodhpur has plenty to offer a tourist with any budget and taste and is a must visit destination on all itineraries.
