Phool Mahal

“I want to do with you what spring does with cherry trees” may be a line from the poem of a famous Italian poet Pablo Neruda but here it is for the beautiful Phool Mahal. Phool Mahal is a part of the complex of the regal Mehrangarh Fort, Jodhpur. A glimpse is enough for falling in love with this incredible Flower Palace. Every corner of this palace speaks oodles about its beauty. And why not, as this was the Maharaja’s apartment dedicated to pleasurable activities. Phool Mahal is a witness to innumerable excellent dance performances by the dancing girls whose only job was to please the Maharaja.

Phool Mahal was built by Maharaja Abhaya Singh (1724-1749) who spent lavishly on its creation. The ceilings of the Mahal displays fine work of gold filigree and the gold for this work was brought from Ahmedabad, Gujarat. During a battle fought between Maharaja Abhaya Singh and Mughal governor, Sarbuland Khan, the former won and gold came as a prize for his victory.
