Umaid Bhawan Palace

Sprawled over an area of 26 acres of land Umaid Bhawan Palace is a master piece when it comes to the heritage hotels of Rajasthan. It was built by Maharaja Umaid Singh of Jodhpur who did not compromise even a bit on the quality of architecture of the palace. The palace was constructed with the finest quality of golden yellow sandstone and the consumption was about one million square feet. He scanned the world to hire a highly skilled architect for the construction of the palace. His search ended in 1925 in England where he commissioned the London firm Lanchester and Lodge for building the palace. Architect Henry Vaughan Lanchester took up the challenging task and transformed the dream of the king into a reality. The palace was completed in 16 years.

Umaid Bhawan Palace when built was the largest royal residence in the world. In 1971, the palace was converted into a heritage hotel which is now owned by Taj Group Of Hotels. A part of the palace still serves as the residence of the royal family of Gaj Singh and another portion was transformed into a small museum displaying pictures, arms, swords, and other items of historic importance.

The palace comes under Desert triangle tour and is also one of the destinations of the Palace On Wheels (a luxurious train).

Umaid Bhawan Palace has 347 well furnished rooms which are high on comfort level. The palace reflects a great amalgamation of eastern and western architectural style. Its architecture was named as Indo-Art-Deco style.

The 'Risala' is the royal kitchen of Umaid Bhawan Palace which serves several dishes of different regions in Rajasthan. Walk to the 'Pillar', a coffee shop inside the palace, to relish hot/ cold coffee while enjoying the surroundings. ‘The Trophy Bar’ is a well stocked bar with different varieties of hard drinks.
