Forts and Palaces of Rajasthan

Amber Fort, JaipurThoughts of luxurious palaces and massive forts race through the mind when one thinks of the classic Rajasthan. The state is well acclaimed for its forts and palaces which play an important role in Rajasthan tourism. These are the royal places where history sleeps.


Rajasthan is dotted with forts and palaces, snuggled on top of hills, on golden sand of arid land, and on beautiful islands on mesmerizing lakes. They reflect the richness and royalty of a bygone era. Their architecture is simply arresting.


FORTS IN RAJASTHAN


Amber Fort:


It is a beautiful fort located on the serene waters of Maotha Lake. Three rulers played their parts in building this majestic fort. The architecture is a perfect blend of Hindu and Mughal styles. It is situated a mere 11km from Jaipur.


Bikaner Fort:


It is also known as Junagarh Fort.This massive fort was built between 1571 -1612 AD by Raja Rai Singhji, ruler of Bikaner. The architecture of this fort is a great testimony to human creativity. The Junagarh fort complex is quite big and encompasses several stunning palaces like Moon Palace, Phool Palace, Karan Mahal,Rang Mahal and Anup Mahal.


Taragarh Fort:


Taragarh Fort was built in the 7th century by Ajaipal Chauhan, the founder of the city. It is located at the top of the Nagpahari hill in Ajmer. Do not miss your chance of visiting this impressive architectural establishment while touring Ajmer. It is one of the oldest hill forts on the world map.


Jaigarh Fort:


It is one of the most marvelous forts of Jaipur. It is perched on a hill named Cheel Ka Teela (Hills of Eagles). Also known as the 'Fort Of Victory', it was built between the 15th and the 18th century keeping in mind the security of Jaipur and Amber during that period. It gives a beautiful view of the forest. Other attractions you can see is its museum housing swords, shields, and guns.


Moti Doongri Fort:


Moti Dungri Fort derives its name from a hill called Moti Dungri, meaning Pearl hill. The fort is perched on top of this hill and in recent years has been the abode of Rajmata (Queen Mother) Gayatri Devi. It is located in the center of Jaipur and is easily accessible. Within its premises is Mata Doongri Temple made with white marble.


Chittorgarh Fort:


This stunning fort was built by Chitrangad Maurya Bappa Rawal. It is a huge fort with a tragic history.


Nahargarh Fort:


The fort offers an enchanting view of the Pink City. The term "Nahargarh" refers to "the Abode of Tigers", so it is also known as the Tiger Fort. There is a mysterious tale of spirit of Rathore prince named Nahar Singh which gave this fort its name.


Kumbhalgarh Fort:


It is one of the most popular forts of Rajasthan and is located in Rajasmand district of Udaipur. It was built by Rana Kumbha in the 15th century and no attacker could ever conquer this grand fort. The length of the fort is notable, which is 36 km and is also the reason for its international fame. You must not miss the sight of this second longest wall in the world said to be next only to the Great Wall of China.


Jaisalmer Fort:


It is one of the most impressive destinations of Jaisalmer, located in the huge Thar Desert, whose fairy- tale like beauty draws a lot of tourists. It is also known as Sonar Quila or the Golden Fort as it spreads over a long stretch of golden colored sand. The medieval era is clearly reflected in the unique architecture of this fort.


Mehrangarh Fort:


It is a fine piece of architecture built by Rao Jodha, the founder of Jodhpur, in 1459. It is located on a steep hill. The fort has several towers providing a picturesque view of the city.


PALACES IN RAJASTHAN


Lal Garh Palace:


It is one of the well known palaces of Bikaner. Made in red stone, it was built in 1902 by Maharaja Ganga Singh Ji in memory of his father Maharaja Lal Singh Ji. The credit for its beauty goes to the perfect amalgamation of Rajput, Mughal and European architectural style and its architect Sir Swinton Jacob.


Gajner Palace:


It is a masterpiece which gives a glimpse of the bygone era to its visitors. It is located on the bank of a beautiful lake in a thickly wooded area. Its architecture shows beautiful shades of Rajputana and traditional Mughal styles. The palace is impeccably carved out in red sandstone.


City Palace Udaipur:


It is the largest palace of Rajasthan constructed in granite and white marble. Its foundation was laid by Maharana Udai Singh of the Sisodia Rajput clan. The palace overlooks Pichola Lake which gives it a picture perfect look. The majestic palace encompasses several buildings, museum and lush green gardens with fountains.


City Palace Jaipur:


It is a jewel in the crown of the Pink City. Maharaja Jai Singh II built the palace complex. Some of the important palaces inside the complex include Badal Mahal, Sh. Govind Dev Temple, City Palace Museum and Chandra Mahal which draws a lot of tourists.


Fateh Prakash Palace:


It is a stunning palace of Udaipur which bagged the National Tourism Award for the best heritage hotel in 'Heritage Grand' category for 2001-2002 by the Department of Tourism, Government of India.


Lake Palace:


It is an apt place for romance for it is a rare palace located in the middle of the Lake Pichola. Covering a large area of 1.5 hectare, it is located in Udaipur. Once the relaxing place for the royals, it now serves as a royal accommodation for the tourists. It is a luxury star hotel providing world- class facilities to the tourists.
