Ranakpur

Jain Temple, RanakpurRanakpur is a small town located in the mountain ranges of Pali district of Rajasthan. It is held in high esteem by the followers of Jainism. Rankapur is located at a distance of 96 km from Udaipur. It is dotted with several Jain temples which are noteworthy for their beautiful carvings. The temple complex is enclosed within a wall and houses the Jain temples whose history date back to the 15th century. They were built in amber stone under the rule of Rana Kumbha, a liberal ruler.

The main temple of the complex is the Chaumukha Temple, which means four-faced temple. It was constructed in the honor of the first Jain Tirthankara, Adinathji. Inside the shrine there is a four-faced idol of the Tirthankara. Covering an area of 48,000 sq. feet, the temple is fortified with twenty four pillared halls and eight domes supported by over four hundred columns. Images of 24 Tirthankaras have been carved delicately on the pillars.

Near the main temple lies two beautiful temples dedicated to saints- Parasvanath and Neminath. The architecture of these temples resembles those of Khajuraho (known world wide for their architecture). The assembly hall of the temple complex resounds with the celestial music of two huge bells weighing 108 kgs.

In the close vicinity of the main temple stands an ancient Sun Temple of the 8th century. This is an important Hindu temple. It is dedicated to Sun God and is known for the enchanting carvings on its walls.

Ranakpur is an important pilgrimage destination. Besides, being situated in a valley of the Aravali mountains, it is a serene town and has excellent climate. For these reasons, Ranakpur attracts tourists seeking a peaceful holiday.
